New Dog Guide – Everything You Need in Week 1

🐾 The New Dog Parent's Essential Guide

Everything you actually need in your first week — and nothing you don't.

Week 1: The Non-Negotiables

When you first bring your dog home, keep it simple. You don't need 50 products. You need these:

🏠 A Safe Space (Crate)

  • Set up a crate before your dog arrives — dogs are den animals. A crate gives them a calm, secure place to retreat to, reduces anxiety, and is the single most effective tool for house training.
  • Use the divider panel — start with a smaller space for puppies. A snug den feels safer than a big open crate.
  • Tip: Never use the crate as punishment. Toss treats in, feed meals inside, and let them explore it at their own pace.

🦮 Collar, Harness & Leash

  • Harness first for new dogs — a no-pull harness distributes pressure across the chest, not the throat. Much safer and more comfortable for puppies and dogs still learning to walk on leash.
  • Get a leash with two handles — the close-control handle near your dog is a lifesaver on busy streets and during early training walks.
  • Tip: Let your dog wear the harness around the house for short periods before the first walk so it doesn't feel strange.

🪮 Grooming

  • A good brush — brushing 2–3x per week prevents matting and builds trust. Start slow, keep sessions short.
  • Paw cleaning routine — after every walk, a quick paw clean prevents dirt, salt, and allergens from spreading through your home.
  • Bath time — use a tearless, natural shampoo for puppies. Once every 4–6 weeks is plenty for most dogs.

🥣 Feeding & Water

  • A spill-proof water bowl — keeps floors dry and ensures your dog stays hydrated all day.
  • Travel bowls — always have a collapsible bowl in your bag for walks and outings.

😴 Sleep & Rest

  • A dedicated sleeping spot — an elevated bed keeps dogs off cold floors and supports joints from day one.
  • Tip: Place the bed near the crate. Dogs sleep 12–14 hours a day — quality rest matters.

🧩 Mental Stimulation

  • Puzzle toys & chew toys — bored dogs are destructive dogs. A treat ball or puzzle toy keeps them engaged and burns mental energy.
  • Tip: 15 minutes of puzzle play = 30 minutes of physical exercise in terms of mental fatigue.

🚽 Potty Training

  • Indoor potty tray + bamboo pads — essential for puppies and apartment dogs. Bamboo pads absorb faster and are eco-friendly.
  • Tip: Most puppies pick up a routine within 1–2 weeks with consistency.

Common First-Week Mistakes

  • Buying too much too fast — start with essentials, see what your dog actually uses
  • No crate from day one — the earlier you introduce it, the easier house training becomes
  • Skipping grooming early on — the sooner you start, the easier it becomes
  • No mental stimulation — a bored dog is a destructive dog
  • Wrong bed or crate size — always size up, dogs grow fast
  • Using the crate as punishment — it should always feel like a safe, positive space
